Saito Goma Fire Walking Training
The fire-walking training at this mountain was first carried out on the banks of the Tone River in 1951, and is a traditional event that has continued for over 70 years.
The fire-walking practice has its origins in the practice of ascetic monks (yamabushi) who would seclude themselves deep in the mountains to practice and endure cravings. In the outdoors, they would pile up firewood, practice the secret art of goma, and throw themselves into the fire in order to attain a state of being one with Acala, who is in the flames.
On the day of the fire-walking ceremony, the ascetics, Bonten and young monks undergo a ritual in front of the main deity, Acala, of Kanzaki-dera Temple, before setting off on a procession through the town. During the procession, the ascetics and Bonten chant loudly, beat drums and sound conch horns as they purify and exorcise the town of Kanzaki.
After a Buddhist service is held at Kanzaki Shrine, the local guardian shrine, the monks finally arrive at the training ground on the banks of the Otone River.
Finally, we arrive at the dojo's huge goma altar, set up on the banks of the Tone River.
The rituals for preparing the place for the gods and Buddha to descend are performed, the fire is transferred to the piled up firewood, the secret ritual of goma is performed, and both the ascetics and believers offer fervent prayers together.
Ascetics and believers pray wholeheartedly to the flames of the Saito Goma, which resemble a dragon rising to the heavens. Then, the mountain ascetics walk barefoot over the flames, which have become a "purifying fire."
This "purifying fire" burns away all evil and disasters.
All visitors are welcome to join in the "fire walking".
Bonten (sacred offerings) for the Bonten portable shrine will be distributed, and each person will hold one at the center of their body as they cross the "purifying fire," become one with the principal image of Fudo Myo-o, and receive the merits of Fudo Myo-o. They will then pray for the fulfillment of their wishes and receive the blessings of warding off misfortune, safety for their families, and personal safety, and then cross barefoot.
Those who complete the fire-walking will be given a talisman called "Hiwatari no Sho (Proof of Fire-Born Samadhi)."
When ordinary people cross, they must avoid the fire. Elderly and children are escorted by monks.
If you are in a wheelchair or have difficulty walking, please let the monks know and they will assist you across.
